Islip, NY – Members of The Ockers Senior Citizen Center Over 60 Club celebrated Carmela Stefanidis’ 90th Birthday in style!

Carmela was born in Astoria, Queens on May 16, 1933. She graduated from Long Island City High School in 1950 and attended Hunter College, where she met the love of her life, Pete. They married in 1953 and lived in Astoria, where they had three daughters.

In 1965, Carmela and Pete moved their family to East Meadow, where they lived for 36 years. Pete was a steamfitter, and Carmela worked for DuPont Pharmaceutical for 15 years as an auditor in the Quality Assurance Department. The family enjoyed vacationing in New Hampshire, where they had a mobile home.

Carmela and Pete eventually became “snowbirds” and spent time enjoying vacation cruises around the United States and Europe. Pete passed away in 2015. “We had a wonderful 62 years together,” said Carmela.

“I have six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. I am grateful for my life and for my family’s love,” she said.

“Happy Birthday, Carmela! On behalf of my colleagues on the Town Board, we wish you a year of good health, happiness, and cherished time with your family,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
